Raising Awareness – National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture

The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture in Chicago was hosting a ceremonial performance by an indigenous tribe along with an official neighborhood renaming to reflect indigenous roots. The museum wanted to raise awareness among the general public to attend, learn about indigenous culture and history and why it’s critical to recognize these roots today. Own It PR secured media coverage from numerous broadcast, print and digital outlets including CBS 2 Chicago, ABC 7 Chicago, WGN TV Chicago, Chicago Sun-Times and Block Club Chicago. Each media outlet created a narrative about the performance and renaming based on the content and interviews Own It PR provided and coordinated, which helped to educate a broad audience and raise awareness of the museum’s mission. Own It PR continued to partner with the Museum over the summer months to provide ongoing media relations for their events, resulting in more than 30 media placements and millions of impressions.

Putting Pressure on Elected Officials – Restore Gompers Park Coalition

Local residents in a Chicago neighborhood formed a coalition to pressure elected officials to put a humane solution in action for a homeless encampment in a neighborhood park. The coalition requested the city provide housing and resources to the unhoused while ensuring the park was accessible for all to use. Own It PR sprang into action on behalf of the coalition, advising on strategy, writing, media training and media relations. Own It PR worked to highlight the situation and secured interviews for coalition board members with a national media outlet as well as every major local media outlet including Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Block Club Chicago, CBS 2 Chicago, NBC 5 Chicago, ABC 7 Chicago, WGN TV Chicago, Univision and more. The relentless coverage included more than 80 segments and articles (the equivalent of a story every three days for eight straight months), sometimes with news stations sending their helicopters to capture an overhead view of the situation. The result was the city providing a $1.2 million investment in housing and resources for the unhoused as well as restoration for the park. Own It PR won a PRSA Skyline Award and Publicity Club of Chicago Trumpet Award for the effective, ongoing media coverage and sparking conversation on the broader topic of homelessness in Chicago.
